Nearly nine in ten organizations now use AI in at least one business function, and 44% say it is scaling across the enterprise, per McKinsey's August 2026 global survey.1 The share that can point to any effect on profit has stayed at 37%, the same as the year before.1 The companies McKinsey calls high performers, where AI accounts for at least 5% of profit, are about 6%, also unchanged.1

Picture the review a year from now. The metric you picked on day one, for example the share of orders that ship late, sits next to where it stood when we started. 03 · How we get you there
The companies that build the models have reached the conclusion we reached in 2017: the work that turns a model into a result has to happen inside the customer. Monthly job listings for forward-deployed engineers, engineers who work inside the customer's team to put AI into production, rose 800% between January and September 2025, per First Round Review.3 We have worked this way for ten years.
